Hello all
After the dire week in hospital the other wk.
I have ACTUALLY Written a complaint- I have never done one to the NHS before so a little nervous.
Has anyone else done it and did it help?

When I changed hospitals my GP suggested I write a letter to the rheumy team I was leaving behind, detailing what I felt was wrong with the system, and why I felt it wasn`t working. I did this quite happily, and my GP wrote one too, as he had his complaints as well. He showed me his letter, & I gave mine to him to see what he thought. Both were sent, but neither my GP nor I received any acknowledgement. I don`t know if it helped future patients there, but it made me feel a whole lot better! Kathleen x PS My GP said only if people are prepared to complain would things ever improve.

Hi jenni, I havent done so yet, but am conetemplating itl re the time it took to get reply from nurses etc. Think I will write anyway, just to make a point. Hope you get satisfaction from yours, they usually take this very seriously. Good luck BARBARA

Good for you Jenni. I complained to my MP re all the lottery cash wasted on photographs in my local hospital if you remember. His response showed that his rear end was so stuck on the fence that I wasted my time. PALS ignored the copy I sent them. Can't wait to hear the outcome.

I have Jenni, about mis-management of birth of my first boy, due to lack of equipment (fat lady BP cuff, didn't have one, used a normal person one on me, got false high BP, induced me, blah blah bla)
i knew it was wrong, made them get hold of one, no more high bp. complained. now every assessment room has a lrge bp cuff. and each ward has several.

Hi Jenni
Good for you! I know it's never going to make your memories of that week any better, but it may help make any future visits better for you and all the other patients who end up in the same place!

Well done, Jenni! Even if you don't hear anything more, at least it would have made you feel better.

Good luck with your complaint Jenni, they have treated you terribly and need to be made aware of how you feel about your recent treatment.

I had cause to make a very serious complaint to our local new hospital some years ago........and though they tried to fob me off with some sort of promise to look into the matter, I wasn't satisfied. To cut a long, long story very short, it took TWO YEARS for them to admit they had been at fault, this was at a meeting of the highest possible level of complaint short of the Ombudsman. They finally offered me financial compensation in a "no fault" settlement. That had never been my aim, all I wanted was an acknowledgement of fault, an apology, and an assurance that things would change. I accepted the money and made them send it to the children's hospice (it was several £1000).................I got my apology.................and , eventually, after the cheque was cashed, an acknowledgement that mistakes had been made......................................nothing has changed though, and sadly things are still pretty awful in this new hospital. Once you make a serious complaint, you have to be prepared for meeting after meeting with the world and his wife, long drawn out written efforts to shut you up, and frequent accusations that perhaps you were "mistaken" in what you know is true. You also HAVE to be determined that, although the blighters weren't there, you were, and YOU are in the right. If you have the stamina, then go for it.....and every good wish for your success, as always, in everything you do. Love L xx Always be aware that what you do might hurt others........and if it could, do nothing without careful consideration of the consequences

Hi Jenni,
Until recently I worked in the directorate that dealt with PCT complaints ( although not in that exact dept) They were taken the most seriously of everything, and were supervised by the highest level - director, chief exec and chairman. There are now strict rules about process and quality assurance and believe me, lessons are learnt and changes made where appropriate.
I would always encourage people to write, both bad and good, because it is powerful stuff in PCT land and I have never known a complainant to be prejudiced in any way. Except when it is neccesary to investigate the complaint they are anonymised.
I'm glad you had a quick response and it will be investigated. Hopefully they will learn there must be other ways to deal with bed shortages than the disgraceful way you were treated.
take care love Alison xx

thanks Alison for the insiders knowledge - which encourages me to complain where necessary, instead of feeling overwhlemed and its hopeless. Jenni Good for you to complain, you have had such a nightmare. whats a level 2... sounds like something said on star ship enterprise are they going into warp factor 4? 40 days almost sounds biblical I hope this makes them sit up and listen to you and improve your care.
